character's full name: Death. Or, as he calls himself, DEATH.
character is from: Discworld, the greatest book series ever.I'm pretty sure you can have fandoms further apart than Pratchett and Digimon, but I can't guess what they are...
school year: Biology teacher
background:
Death is the process or event that happens after an organism reaches the end of its life span. The character Death is the anthropomorphic personification of this process. He's not a god; gods on the Discworld live off belief, but Death exists whether there's anyone to believe in him or not. In one novel, he's seen waiting around at both the beginning and the end of time. However, his appearance is based off human belief, so he looks like the typical Grim Reaper figure - tall skeleton, black robe, carries a scythe and rides a pale horse (called Binky). He also speaks in SMALL CAPS, because he doesn't have vocal cords. His voice has been variously described as "the tone of funeral bells", "not quite right" and "a very good bass".
His handwriting, while unusual in itself (it has serifs), isn't always written in capitals - but because Death just isn't complete without small caps, if this app is accepted I would write all his entries and comments like that instead.
Being an anthropomorphic personification, Death views his duty as incredibly important. He compares it to a collector's hobby, only with souls instead of stamps or pins, and he's always as polite as possible towards his "clients". He doesn't have anything to do with actual killings (except in the earliest books, which frankly suck), nor does he know anything about the afterlife. More recently, he's started appearing in situations where characters might die, due to the Uncertainty Principle. He doesn't only take the lives of humans - the only creatures on the Disc he isn't responsible for are rats, gerbils, hamsters and the like, which are dealt with by the Death of Rats. There's also a Death of Fleas, but that character only appears for about two pages.
His powers are all very tied up with his job. He's not invisible, but generally people have difficulty recognising him because they don't want to believe he's actually there. The exceptions are young children, wizards, witches, and cats. He can also walk through walls and move freely around time, on the basis that he's much realer than either of them. The only places he can't go are where there's no real life, and therefore nothing that can die. After entering here, all of these powers would be gone... but I'd like him to keep the scythe, even if he doesn't do anything with it. Because, without it, he's just a big skeleton.
Where the Discworld Death diverges from other similar personifications is that he takes an interest in humans outside his normal work, and completely fails to understand it. He created his own home styled after a typical upper-class Victorian house, but the inside of it is bigger than the outside because he never got the hang of perspective. Similarly, the landscape outside his house is blurred to make it appear far away, but it's actually very close by. He always sticks to the rules, so people are allowed to play a game with him for their lives (but not chess, because he CAN NEVER REMEMBER HOW THE LITTLE HORSE-SHAPED ONES MOVE), and occasionally he lets them win on purpose. In particular, he's fascinated by how humans naturally lie to themselves and see the entire world through a filter of metaphor.
At one point, he was demoted from his position and rendered mortal. During this time, while expecting to die, he went to live in a backwater village. He was still uncomfortable interacting with the other residents, acting practically autistic in some ways, but the experience taught him a lot about emotions and why humans act the way they are. It's arguable whether or not he was attracted to the woman he worked for, but they managed to carry off an interesting relationship in a very short amount of time.
Despite his basic lack of understanding, Death is very sympathetic towards humanity outside his normal line of work. He views this as necessary, too; in one of the most dramatic scenes in the series, he pleaded to his "boss" Azrael that humans had nothing to hope for IF NOT FOR THE CARE OF THE REAPER MAN. He also seems to consider the process of death as an integral part of life. This often sets him at odds with the creatures known as the Auditors of Reality, who do the universe's paperwork and consider the whole "life" business messy. Since it's technically against the Rules for Death to alter history in any way, he's rarely the main protagonist of a novel, but he does like to offer his support to them.
A quirk of his character is that Death often has what have been referred to as "fancies". These often begin with him trying to imitate humans, and have varied amounts of success. For example, he once adopted an orphaned baby girl called Ysabell because he heard it was a good thing to do, and let her age until she was sixteen. After that, he took on a teenage boy called Mort as an apprentice. After a series of confusing events, Mort ran off with Ysabell and they had happy lives as Duke and Duchess of Sto Helit until being killed in a stagecoach accident - but not before raising a daughter. Because of the way Discworld genetics work (i.e., oddly), this means that Death has a granddaughter. He's quite fond of her, despite the obvious difficulties. Other "fancies" of his in the past have included standing in for the Disc's equivalent on Santa Claus and trying to get rid of his own memory. Considering that he's immortal and has an eternity's worth of memories to forget, the latter wasn't easy.
